Traditionally, picture lighting involved the straightforward process of placing an incandescent or halogen lightbulb into a fixture positioned above your artwork and considering the task complete. To be honest, how much light do you want?

Generally speaking, paintings that display uniform lighting require more uniform illumination. While many modern and abstract pieces may not fit this description, many others do. Accentuating light that draws attention to specific areas of a piece of art is often more advantageous for portraits, sunsets, and other pieces with dark themes. Consider emphasizing the main theme of a painting if the subject matter is delicate, profound, or deeply emotional. Brighter, more consistent lighting is typically required for a piece of art that is cheerful, vibrant, and evenly illuminated.

Many businesses promote the lumens or candela of their products, but it is the effective light distribution, rather than just brightness, that makes art lighting so important. Lumens are not a useful statistic for art lighting because they strictly measure the total light output, combining all directions. It is not difficult to create a vibrant art light, nor should it be the objective.

Here's why we don't use lumens when measuring artwork: Lumens are a unit of measurement for total light output, but they do not account for more significant factors such as light dispersion and coverage. A flashlight held close to a wall serves as a useful analogy. It emits a very focused, tight spotlight when positioned one foot away from the wall. If you move it ten feet away from the wall, the spread of light becomes much softer and larger. Although the lumens would be the same, the properties of the light output would differ greatly. Light that would otherwise be wasted in a simple design system is captured, concentrated, and redistributed using various specialized optical systems, such as primary and secondary optics.

The way light is applied to the artwork matters more than the amount of light that can be produced. Providing adequate coverage and intensity for artwork of all sizes remains our primary concern. Light fall-off follows the inverse square law, as depicted in the figure below. This demonstrates how the light from a fixture disperses over distance in the shape of a cone. We have taken this law into account when recommending the size of artwork.

The Color Rendition Index (CRI), with a maximum value of 100, is a numerical measure of how accurately a light source reproduces colors as they appear in natural sunlight.

For example, if you buy clothes in a store and later realize that the color looks different in natural light, the store's lighting could be the reason. More specifically, inadequate lighting affects color rendering.

The ideal lighting for fine art displays is natural light.

The color rendering index (CRI) measures how accurately a light source can depict the colors of an object, and it is highest for sunlight. In other words, it's the most precise representation of the colors found in a piece of art. LED lighting is the closest alternative to natural light. When selecting lighting for an art exhibition, technical considerations come into play.

Stated differently, CRI is an indicator of how accurately a light reproduces color. Vibrant and clear colors across the entire visible spectrum are ensured by a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) score of 90 or higher. You should be able to display your artwork. All of our lights have Color Rendering Index (CRI) scores of 90 or higher.

Color enhances and prolongs the senses.

Light intensity and color temperature can be adjusted using color-tunable lighting technology. To create single bulbs or strips, it blends LEDs with different color temperatures.

Our picture lights are equipped with LEDs carefully selected from the narrowest available bins, predominantly featuring 2700, 4500, or 6000K (CCT) LEDs with 90+ CRI values. Our newly released color tuning series offers a 3-step color adjustment range between 2,700K and 6,500K (CCT).

Legacy lighting systems were able to produce light with excellent color accuracy (CRI) at 2,400K–2,700K (CCT). The end result is a bright yellow or amber light that may not be suitable for many interior design styles and art forms.

When executed correctly (with a CRI of 90+), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3,000K produces more neutral light that is ideal for clear lighting, complementing a variety of artistic styles and color tones. There are occasions when LEDs receive criticism for being either too warm (yellow) or too cool (blue). In order to find LEDs that are suitable for illuminating your artwork, we work closely with our suppliers.

Choosing the right accent lighting for artwork and other wall-mounted objects can be a difficult decision for any space.

Our LED lighting does not produce heat or ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can degrade pigments and damage rare silks, antique photos, and paintings. In contrast, halogen lighting can.

When LED lights are properly specified (high CRI and 4000K), they accurately reproduce the colors in artwork, unlike fluorescent or halogen lighting, which tends to distort colors by adding hues and tones, mostly yellow and orange.

Power-efficient: Our LED art lights consume only a fraction of the energy compared to incandescent and halogen picture lights.
